Emerald Kalama Chemical introduced Kalama® 3-Phenyl Propanol (3PP) FCC as a multifunctional offering for cosmetics applications. Kalama® 3PP performs a range of functions to optimize the performance and desirability of personal care products. It acts as a texture enhancer, stabilizer and process aid, while extending the antimicrobial efficacy of sodium benzoate, enabling the use of a green, skin friendly preservative in formulations up to pH 7.
“Multifunctionals are a growing ingredient category for cosmetics because they help meet consumer demand for clean labels. By achieving multiple functions with a single ingredient, manufacturers can reduce the number of ingredients in a product, simplifying the label and overcoming complex formulation challenges at the same time. Kalama® 3PP enhances stability, solubilization, sensory experience, makeup removal and emolliency in personal care products,” said Paul Wanrooij, Business Development Director for Emerald’s Consumer Specialties business.
In addition to its primary functions, Kalama® 3PP also helps to address challenges with preservation. The selection of available antimicrobial actives continues to shrink due to regulatory pressure and consumer preferences. Kalama® 3PP enhances the preservative power of Purox® S & Kalama® sodium benzoates. Sodium benzoate has become a preferred antimicrobial because it is eco-friendly, gentle on the skin and effective against a broad range of bacteria, yeasts and molds.
“In many cases, sodium benzoate provides sufficient preservation on its own, but some products can be challenging to preserve due to their overall formulation. Ingredient selection, pH and water activity are important factors that impact microbial activity. Our applications scientists determined that our personal care ingredient, Kalama® 3PP, significantly boosts the antimicrobial efficacy of our sodium benzoate products. When used together, these ingredients help to ensure that hard-to-preserve products are sufficiently shielded against microbial contamination,” Wanrooij said.
Emerald will host an upcoming educational webinar, “Better together – Using multifunctionals with sodium benzoate to formulate enhanced personal care products”, on October 20 at 10 am EDT. Dr. Amber Yarnell, R&D research scientist at Emerald, will discuss formulation methods to optimize performance and preservation in personal care products using multifunctionals, including Kalama® 3PP, chelators and surfactants.
